See The Storm wins at Ascot

Kate Harrington made her first ride in England a winning one when guiding See The Storm to success in the Longines Handicap at Ascot.

The jockey, who is the daughter of well-known trainer Jessica Harrington, was always travelling well on board the 14/1 shot but she had to be at her strongest in the final furlong as runner-up, Born To Surprise, came with a late challenge.

However, Harrington managed to extract one last effort from the six-year-old to record a short-head success, with Kinglami a further length and a quarter back in third.

"This is amazing as it's my first ever ride in England," said the jockey.

"I visited Ascot for the first time during the Royal meeting this year and thought to myself 'I'd love to ride here' and a month later, not only have I managed it but I've also won!

"The plan was actually to come with a late challenge but he was actually travelling so well two out that I thought I better just go for it. All credit to the horse though as he's been really game and stuck his neck out well. A couple of strides later and we might have lost it."

Ian Williams was delighted with the winner.

"He won up at Redcar last weekend and I thought it was a bit ambitious turning him out again under a penalty, but he's done very well," said the trainer.

"He stepped up to seven furlongs without any bother, but he is good over five and a half and six furlongs. He's won narrowly but off his highest mark to date and with a 6lb penalty so he'll be going up again. I have to say See The Storm was nicely ridden by Katie. She did the homework and called us, so credit to her."
